Dreaming Houses

I know I have featured this home before. Here it is again because I love it.

Ok, so I have already built the house (in my head) but it sort of looks like I'm not going to get the block.

I was doing the whole 'act as if' thing .... as if I was going to get it....willing it into reality, the night before last... pouring over my chicken scratch sketches.... fitting everything into every sqm. A cut on the lower side to hide the garage from the front elevation, a dutch door into the mudroom, an L shaped porch at the front, a pool in the far left corner, poolhouse coming off the back of the garage, entry foyer with gorgeous staircase. It all fit! Even though it's a small block, it's on a corner. Can you imagine... a gabled elevation on each street! Sigh! And it's flat!.... limited retaining... limited engineering costs.

So the seller is not budging off his price. He owns, and rents out, the house next door to this tiny block I am stalking. I have asked the agent to go back and tell him, "does he realise what he is turning down next door to his place, if he doesn't accept my offer?"Does he not know that my project will increase the value of his property next door? The owner actually knows of me. He had a wander through 'the house' before I sold it. I used to be great friends with his previous tenant.. still am. None of this helps of course when it comes to wheeling and dealing! The agent is going to give it all another try tomorrow.... at my dogged insistence. I have already increased my offer twice. I'm afraid, that's it. It wont be win-win if I go any higher.

Ok, most likely I will be walking away from this one. Some 'buyer's market'! I don't think inner city Brisbane is a buyer's market at all. What GFC? This is where the statistics are misleading. There may have been a reported drop of 6% in house values, in Brisbane last year.... but that was the outer suburban areas. It was certainly not within 5km of the CBD.... well certainly not where I am looking!

There'll be something else. I know it. I can feel it :)

Happy Wednesday!

  1. Well, I hope the owner has a change of heart, A-M; it sounds perfect.

But even if he doesn't budge, I'm sure that the right block at the right price will eventually appear... searching and waiting is always tough though. :/

  2. Sending you all my positive vibes A-M, something will come up! If it's meant to be then it's meant to be. I love the angle of the photo a the bottom of your post....ah, I'd kill for a wide, white-floor painted verandah (we live in a 4 bedrm brick souless house, despite my efforts).
Have a lovely day up there

  4. Oh A M I hope the stars align for you! We live in Greenslopes and were very lucky to get a renovators delight right near the park. With all the new developement planned for Stones Corner we are so thankful we are this close to the city. Especially when running a small business from home. I know you will find the right block for your dream home just keep believing! X

  5. You are so right when you say that the prices of the inner-city have not budged, A-M. I took a fancy to building but the scarcity of decent 'knock-'em-down' houses is ridiculous! And I'm talking about under 3km from the city... So, it's renovations for us, which is also good, as my Qlder has good bones. Fortunately, I can use your beautiful photos and sage advice to steer me in the right direction. :-)

Good luck on the land/house hunt. If my real estate experience has taught me anything, it's that there is always another property, just waiting to be found!

  7. This stuff is so tough.

    Afterwards we always know why.

    And are glad.

So, whatever happens. It's the right thing.

  9. What a pretty home. I'd love to see that being built. Hopefully the right block turns up again. It will no doubt. Patience and good luck seem to go hand in hand with such things.

  10. Just think of this first offer and planning phase as a warm-up for you. That perfect property is around there somewhere just waiting for you to find it and make it gorgeous. It will happen, I believe in it!

  11. Obviously he is not thinking straight, doesn't he realise what a treat it would be to have an A-M house right next door? There is a block out there just patiently waiting for you to find it.

  12. I will keep my fingers and toes crossed that the owner sees the light. Who wouldn't want one of your houses next to their rental property or primary residence for that matter?! And you are right, if this one doesn't work out...another, even better lot will come along!

    Kat :)

P.S. I could find you a lovely lot near me...just sayin'!

  17. From what i'm hearing the buyers aren't buying and the sellers aren't selling in the Brisvegas market! (poor real estate agents) I've been trying to sell a property and the price offered on it was so low i've given up! (no it doesn't fit your criteria unfortunately.) It's a funny old market!!

  18. The Brisbane real estate market really is strange at the moment isn't it? I believe that you will make the next house work with whatever you decide to settle on. Sometimes our dreams come in forms we don't realise. That's what makes dreaming so fun. And so nerve wracking! I plan on living out my "new home" experience through your next house as our plans have been out on hold for the next 3 years. Le sigh.

  19. I hope that the vendor sees sense and lets you weave your magic on his dirt!!
If the stars were truly aligned you would be further along with your dream and I could be learning from you.!!
That might make my decisions that less daunting, I am not feeling confident with all of the things to choose..
Speaking of which does anyone have an opinion on "Hamptons style" internal door handles. I know it sounds like a crazy thing to be stuck on, it is just that nothing seems right.?
I would appreciate any advice that anyone would be happy to share.

I think the classic levers are perfect Hampton's door handles. I used the Classic Lever Latch. A-M xx

Thanks for all your well wishes. I still haven't heard anything. I agree, if it doesn't turn out, there is a better one waiting for me.
